About
Hailed as a “superb clarinetist” by the Washington Post, Kristina Teuschler is a musician, educator and cultural worker. She is a first-generation American, a child of Jamaican and Brazilian immigrants. She grew up in Madison, Wisconsin and lives in New York City.
Kristina joined the West Point Band as a clarinetist in 2018. In addition to this full-time job, she is a versatile musician that performs with a variety of ensembles; from symphony orchestras, to indie bands, to contemporary ensembles. Highlights have included performances with Orchestra of St. Luke’s on their chamber music series, Lincoln Center’s multi-media production of New York Counterpoint, and International Contemporary Ensemble. She recently performed the Reed 1 book (clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone, recorder) on Little Island’s month-long production of Marriage of Figaro, a creative reimagining of the opera featuring countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo. She is frequently recording and performing with many independent artists and bands in New York City, and performs an original electronic music project playfully titled ‘mock audition’ that combines manipulated samples, clarinet repertoire, and live processing to provide a satirical critique of Western art music.
Showcasing her versatile skillsets, Kristina co-directs the Madison New Music Festival, a weekend-long summer event supporting the creation and performance of contemporary music in her home state of Wisconsin. The festival focuses its programming on diversifying and decolonizing local arts and culture, encouraging engagement with local issues, and fostering collaboration within its community.
Kristina was the first Community Liaison for Orchestra of St. Luke’s, helping the orchestra produce their education & community programs, forming new community partnerships, and working to deepen their action plan surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion.
She is currently a Steering Committee member of Music Workers Alliance. (You should join or get involved)
A passionate educator, her students have successfully auditioned for scholarships, concerto competitions, Interlochen Arts Camp, and state-honors ensembles. She has taught in classroom settings with several after school music programs including The Chicago Metamorphosis Orchestra Project, Manhattan School of Music’s Outreach Program, The Harmony Program, and Youth Orchestra of St. Luke's.
She has conducted workshops on equity in the arts for University of North Carolina-Greensboro, Illinois Music Educators Association (ILMEA), and Clarinet Maestro Festival.
Kristina received her Bachelor’s Degree from Northwestern University and her Master’s Degree from Manhattan School of Music. Her primary teachers were Mark Nuccio, Steven Cohen, and J. Lawrie Bloom.
